Bird Safe Spices ...

Spices can be a nice addition to add flavor and fragrance to your chop creations. We see many bird owners who stress and worry over providing variety and flavor to their feathered babies, and all we can say about that is ...

 "Good for them!"

I’m happy to see people concerned with the happiness and well-being of their pets; however, since we know a parrot's palate is not "highly sophisticated" I usually just stick with a few that are more pungent and also bring a little added benefit to the meal.

You might be surprised at the health benefits that come from certain spices like Tumeric, Cayenne, Cumin, Ginger, and Black Pepper. Here are some of spices that I sprinkle on my chop for a little added taste and benefits.

  • Black Pepper
  • Cayenne
  • Celery Seed
  • Cinnamon (Ceylon)
  • Cumin
  • Fennel
  • Poppy Seed
  • Red Pepper Flakes
  • Rosemary
  • Star Anise (Chinese only - Japanese star anise, Illicium anisatum, a similar tree, is highly toxic and inedible; in Japan, it is burned as incense.)
  • Turmeric
